This
painting brings back happy memories of the years I spent teaching
in Ashcraig School in Glasgow, which overlooks Hogganfield Loch.
I learned an interesting story from a man I met while out for a
walk round the Loch one day. The house between the trees, which
is now empty, used to be the local Primary school. He had attended
this school as a boy, and he and the other boys often left a fishing
line in the water overnight - stretching from the school wall to
the loch. They would check their lines in the morning before the
school bell rang to see if they had caught any fish! (Must have
had a very indulgent heedie! Certainly not one who worried unduly
about Health & Safety or, perish the thought, whether angling
was politically correct!) Spare a thought though, for 'auld Jimmy'
making his way home from the pub on a dark night, when fishing lines
would be the last thing on his mind.
